What is Kaomoji?
Kaomoji (顔文字) are Japanese-style text emoticons made from standard keyboard characters. Unlike Western emoticons like :) or :D which are read sideways, kaomoji are read upright and can express a much wider range of emotions and situations.
The Word
The word comes from Japanese:
- 顔 (kao) = face
- 文字 (moji) = character / letter
So kaomoji literally means "face characters".
History
Kaomoji emerged in Japan in the late 1980s, largely through ASCII art culture on early Japanese bulletin board systems. They became widely popular through:
- 2channel — Japan's massive anonymous forum
- Mixi — early Japanese social network
- LINE — messaging app with kaomoji built in
The key difference from Western emoticons is that kaomoji were designed to be read without tilting your head, which makes them more immediately readable and expressive.
